During Milan fashion week last February, Dolce & Gabbana sponsored opening of the Extreme Beauty in Vogue exhibition at the Palazzo della Ragione. During the same week, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana unveiled their fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection. Extreme and Beauty were obviously the themes running through the designers mind while designing their latest collection, Marilyn Monroe, Salvador Dali, and Elsa Schiaparelli being the inspirations. From a-list stars in the front row, to gloves used as hats on the model’s heads, the collection was very surreal. In tough economic times, it was surreal that Scarlett Johansson, Kate Hudson, Naomi Watts, Freida Pinto and Eva Mendes all sat front row, while most other designers chose not to host celebrities. It was surreal that while most designers played it safe, Dolce & Gabbana delivered one of their most un-wearable collections in recent history. From ballooning shoulders, to bubblegum pink gorilla sleeves, to a necklace of watches and Marilyn Monroe printed dresses, the collection is definitely an acquired type of beauty, Extreme.
